NORTHERN TIEN SHAN

The Northern Tien Shan is a mountain system lying to the north from the biggest mountain lake of Center Asia - Issyk Kul and to the south from Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan.
Splendid and charming nature in combination with hospitable local people is a distinguishing feature of the Northern Tien Shan region.
Our route goes through Kazakhstan and Kyrghyzstan and finishes in a surprisingly wonderful place with snowy mountain peaks reflected in the blue water of the Issyk Kul Lake.

The best travel time: June v September.

Day 1 Arrival in Almaty. Transfer to the mountain-ski base Chimbulak. Accommodation in hotel. Walking in the valley of the Tujuksu river.
Day 2 Round walk to the Talgar pass. Sightseeing tour to Medeo, a mountain resort. Picturesque views of Medeo and of the environs. Camp at 2330m.
Day 3 Mountain-ski base Chimbulak v Butakovski pass (3154m) - Left Talgar river. The ascend to the Butakovskiy pass, is easy ascent though it takes about 5 hours. Camp is among Tien Shan firs on the comfortable Sunny glade. Camp at 2720m. (6 hours, 14 km).
Day 4 Leaving Talgar river-Tourists River - ascent to the Tourist pass. Ascent to the upper valley of the Left Talgar River with uninterrupted panoramas of the circus. Camp at 3300m (4h, 5km).
Day 5 Tourists river - Tourist pass (4000m) - glacier Mutniy - Kyzylsay river -Ozernaya river. Moving to the alpine zone via small glaciers, we enjoy the views of the spurs of mountain ranges and canyons of the rivers Left Talgar and Big Almaatinka. We continue walking on a good path and then on a tarmac road to the confluence of the rivers Kyzylsay and Ozernaya (5h/11km). Camp at 3200 m.
Day 6 Day of rest. Easy walking to the ice circuit of the area.
Day 7 Ozernaya river v Ozerniy pass (3503m) - Kel -Almaty river - Chon-Kemin river. Easy ascent to the Ozerniy pass by a good path. Wide panoramic views of the valley of the Chon-Kemin river from the pass (4h, 9km). Camp in the valley of the Chon-Kemin river (2990m).
Day 8 Chon-Kemin river - Jasyk Kul lake. Easy ascent to the lake through the valley of the Chon-Kemin river with panoramas of the upper Chon-Kemin valley. Rest on the lake. After lunch we make a round circuit to the upper canyon (3h, 7km). Camp at 3200m.
Day 9 Jasyl-Kul lake - Aksu river - ascent to the North Aksu pass. Going up the valley of the Aksu river to the alpine zone over a glacier moraine. Camp near the East-Aksu glacier (4h, 7km). Camp at 3400 m.
Day 10 Aksu river - East-Aksu glacier - North-Aksu pass (4052m) - Chon-Aksu river. Crossing of the North-Aksu pass. We gain exciting views of the valley of the Chon-Aksu river. Descent from the pass by a good path along conifer forest. (6h/14km). Camp at 3400 m.
Day 11 Descend to the valley of the Chon-Aksu river through conifer woods with springs and lovely glades (4h, 10km). Camp in the forest at 2800m.
Day 12 Chon-Aksu river - Grigorievka village - Issyk-Kul lake. Descent to the valley of the Chon-Aksy river through a picturesque forest dispersed with yurts of shepherds. Acquaintance with the way life of the locals (5h, 14km). Camp on the shore of the Issyk-Kul lake (1608 m).
Day 13 Rest at the Issyk-Kul Lake.
Day 14 Transfer Issyk-Kul lake v Karkara river - Keghen - Almaty. Accommodation at the hotel.
Day 15 Departure from Almaty.

EXTRA ITINERARY

Day 14 Transfer Grigirievka-Karkara (208km, 8h).
Day 15 Flight by helicopter to the vicinity of the highest tops of Tien Shan: Khan-Tengry (7010m) and Pobeda (7349m). Mertzbakher lake. Return to Karkara.
Day 16 Free day in case of bad weather. Walking along the valley of the Karkara river.
Day 17 Transfer to Almati (350 km, 9h). En-Route stopping at the Charyn canyon. Hotel.
Day 18 Departure.
